  1. Yes, because it helps us in going beyond the four walls of our classes and apply practically what our learnings on safe spaces are. It gives us insights on how our campus and surrounding areas are designed and how user friendly and gender sensitive they truly are.

  2. Yes, the Safety Audit through Safetipin app is a very innovative process of gauging safety and makes us look at the everyday little things more clearly to understand bigger realities of safety, public spaces, women’s agency and rights, access etc. I witnessed how the walk paths outside our campus had no proper slabs covering the areas, some parts felt unsafe during the day, no proper street lights in some areas.

Yes, I think Safety Audit is an effective tool. Firstly, we become aware about the various ways in which we might be discriminated and how we became aware about many things- things that we didn’t consider as harassment and took it lightly, now we will look and observe it more carefully and criticise it. Secondly, it will keep check on the various discrimination – direct, indirect that are going on in and around campus. It will help reduce problems related to lighting, visibility, walk path.

Yes, I do feel the Safety Audit is an effective tool mainly because most of the students of Cotton University, Guwahati live nearby or on and around campus- hostels and PGs to be exact. And the streets leading them there from the campus, a majority of those do not have enough streetlights or even a proper walkpath and even the number and amount of security personnel are scarce or none at all. Hence, this creates difficulty for the students of all genders walking home alone, especially after sunset. And its mostly difficult in the winters as the sun sets early and the classes just get over at five and even six for sixth semester students. If Safety Audit and its advantages especially for what it stands for is well explained and made aware to the general public or even the students, then yes, gender equity can be achieved since afterall, this process will ultimately benefit the general public only.

Saftey Audit is a very powerful tool. It captures acual data in terms of how many street lights are there etc., and also focuses on perceptions. For instance, does a woman feel safe in a public space such as a hospital, police station, park during day time and night time? How do an able-bodied woman, a differently abled man, a transgender person all perceive space and safety differently?

It raises many questions – is there a need for FEMALE SECURITY GUARDS at the campus gates? Will it help to have female BUS CONDUCTORS where girls travel long distances in college buses and feel unsafe being either the first one to be picked up or the last one to be dropped off?

Yes! This process can help us understand and analyse the requirement of the particular surrounding and implement the required amount of security and visibility aspects in and around campus. It will engage in equity because it will give equal opportunity to all the genders to access the campus in anytime they want be it staying late-night, access the campus libraries both for the students and the teachers.

Yes, I feel Safety Audit is definitely an effective tool to engage with gender equity on and around the campus. This is because of the following reasons:
    1. People who are new in the area could use the data and act accordingly.
    2. The results can be presented tot he authority. The authority then, in turn can make policies in order to maintain a safe campus promoting gender equity.
